Shallow water rippling over pale sand in flat afternoon light
Lakewood, California

A full house, a full calendar, and something you have never said out loud.

Lakewood is about twenty minutes from the office. The men who come from here are usually mid-life, mid-mortgage, and trying to find fifty minutes in a week that already belongs to other people.

Who comes from here

Family men, mostly, and mostly for the first time.

Lakewood clients are frequently men who have never been to therapy at all. There was no crisis language in their house growing up and there is not much of it now. They came because something got expensive: a marriage that has gone flat, a habit that keeps outgrowing the promises they make about it.

What they usually expect is to be told what is wrong with them. What actually happens in a first session is a fairly practical conversation about the last month: when it happens, what precedes it, what it costs. That is less humiliating and more useful than being diagnosed.

Is this you

Four sentences I hear from this side of the 605.

Open whichever one lands. Nothing has to describe you exactly to be worth a conversation.

A flat ocean horizon under a wide pale sky
The drive, honestly

Twenty minutes at noon. Longer at five.

I would rather you plan around the real number than the optimistic one. If the only slot that fits your week is the one you would arrive to late and irritated, take video instead. The session quality difference is smaller than the difference between attending and not.

A common pattern from Lakewood: telehealth as the default, in person once a month or when something is heavy enough to want to be in the room for.
