Focus area

You are forty-one, and her disappointment still runs your week.

Most men living inside this have no name for it. They have a description: guilty about ordinary choices, unable to say what they actually want, and married to someone who says she feels like she is competing.

Recognize

You are unlikely to have searched for this. You may still recognize every line of it.

Men come to me for the behavior, the marriage, the shame. This turns up in the third or fourth session, usually sideways, usually in a sentence about a phone call.

Open whichever of these sounds like your own life. Recognizing several is common and it is not an accusation against anyone.

What it is

It is not too much love. It is a role you were given before you could decline it.

Enmeshment is a word for a relationship without a workable boundary between two people’s emotional lives. In the version I see most, a boy became the person who held his mother steady. Not because she was cruel, usually because she was lonely, overwhelmed, or married to someone who had gone quiet.

He was good at it. He read her mood from the sound of the door. He learned that his own needs were manageable, and that a well-timed reassurance could change the temperature of a whole house. That is a remarkable skill for a nine-year-old to develop, and it was praised. Nobody said: this is costing him something.

What it cost is separateness. If your mood was permanently load-bearing for someone else, you never got much practice at having a preference that was simply yours. So at forty-one you can run a department, and you cannot say out loud that you would rather not go on Sunday.

Two things then tend to follow. The first is that guilt behaves oddly. An ordinary adult decision (a holiday elsewhere, a shorter call, a plan with your wife) produces a flare of wrongdoing entirely out of scale with the act. That is not conscience. It is an old alarm reporting that you have stepped out of a job you were never told you had taken.

The second is that your marriage inherits the arrangement. Your partner is not imagining the ranking. When she says she feels like she is competing, she is often describing the architecture accurately, and the argument that follows is about a specific weekend rather than the architecture, which is why it never resolves.

The guilt is not evidence that you are doing something wrong. It is evidence that you are doing something new.

None of this requires your mother to be a villain, and I have no interest in making her one. She is not in the room, she does not get to answer, and a label applied to an absent person is not therapy. What we work on is the position you are in now and what you would like to be different about it.

One more connection, since this practice is what it is. A man who never had permission to hold a private self will often build one anyway, somewhere out of sight. And a man whose first lesson about women was that his job is to manage their feelings tends to find honest desire complicated, hard to state, easier to arrange privately. That is not always part of this. When it is, it usually explains a great deal at once.

The work

Five stretches, and none of them are dramatic.

There is no confrontation scene at the end of this. The changes are small and the guilt they produce is the actual subject.

Naming

Putting a word to it

Most men arrive with no name for this, only a description: guilty, obligated, vaguely furious, unable to explain why an ordinary phone call takes something out of them. Naming the structure is not a diagnosis of your mother. It is a description of a position you were put in.

Questions

Most of them are versions of: am I allowed to call this a problem?
